Honoring 75 years of Barry University!

Although the Barry University Law School is a relatively new edition to the Barry University family, the University has a wonderful history, and the Monsignor William Barry Memorial Library Archives and Special Collections is the place to see that history! The Monsignor William Barry Memorial Library is located on Barry University’s main campus in Miami Shores.

The Archives and Special Collections department within the Monsignor William Barry Memorial Library is filled with interesting documents, rare books, photographs, audio recordings, and other artifacts chronicling Barry University’s history. If you have the opportunity, request a tour with Archives and Special Collections Librarians—you’ll be glad you did!

The Archives and Special Collections are managed by Ximena Valdivia, Archives and Special Collections Managing Librarian. Dominique, Librarian Technician for the Archives and Special Collections, works with Ximena to ensure Archives and Special Collections items are collected, catalogued, and preserved for the benefit of the University and future researchers. Additionally, Ximena and Dominque assist members of the Barry community with accessing and using the Archives and Special Collections. Beyond those services, they provide instruction and tours, as well as, create various exhibits using items from the Archives and Special Collections.

I had the privilege of taking a tour of the Archives and Special Collections two weeks ago while attending a library conference in the Miami area. I can tell you it was exciting to see pictures of Presidents of the United States and letters written and signed by John F. Kennedy! Those are only a small portion, though, of the thousands of documents, pictures, and artifacts in the collection. There were also books, clothes, and other items associated with the founders of Barry University. There was even a book dated to the mid-1600s filled with hand-painted artwork!

Here is a picture of artwork in the book from the 1600s.
