Welcome back to YOUR Barry Law Library!

Well, it’s August — the hottest month of the year, and sometimes it feels like the longest.  Football season doesn’t start until September, and neither do our favorite TV shows.  Flanked by July 4th and Labor Day weekends, there aren’t as many opportunities for beach getaways or cookouts.  And for those of you who just moved to Florida, it’s too hot and humid to stay outside for long.  (Seriously, you guys – stay hydrated.)

This summer, many Barry students chose to attend our Study Abroad program in El Escorial, Spain, where they took interesting classes and adventured all over Europe.  Others worked prestigious internships and lucrative summer associate positions, learning the law in ways they never imagined, networking all the while with future colleagues and bosses.  Some just enjoyed the much-deserved down time, spending their days and nights with family and friends who missed them.

Our professors were toiling away on their scholarship, and some taught summer classes, both here and abroad.  And our recent graduates studied countless hours for the July Bar Exam, which I’m sure went better than they thought.  All summer, we saw them in the Law Library and tried to commiserate and cheer them on.  Hopefully they got to relax a little in August, at least.

Yes, here we are in August.  Whether you have kids or not, you may feel a little wistful and nostalgic when you see the “BACK TO SCHOOL!” signs and sales everywhere.  If not, you might feel a familiar pang of melancholy, knowing that summer funtimes are over and things are about to get REAL.

Well, your friendly neighborhood Law Library staff is here, and we’ve been here all summer.  We missed you, and we’ll be happy to see you again over the next few weeks.  And if you’re new, we’re especially happy to meet you.  Please come by and introduce yourselves.  Let us know where you’ve been and where you want to go.  Definitely let us know if you need anything!

Check out our August display case, facing you when you enter the Law Library, featuring books about the best study habits for achieving success in law school.  As I’ve said before and almost certainly will again, your success is OUR success.  For you new 1Ls, we have a huge selection of study aids for your classes in the Reserve collection behind the Circulation Desk, so ask anyone at Circ for what you need.  These are materials that can be checked out for four hours at a time, for on-campus use only.

We have a huge surprise for all of you on our Databases page, accessible through the Law Library website at http://eguides.barry.edu/BarryLawLibraryHome: an amazing new resource, the Wolters Kluwer Online Study Aid Library.  This is exactly what it sounds like — all your favorite study aids available to you online for no additional costs.  The Examples and Explanations series, the Glannon Guides, Emanuel CrunchTime, and so much more.  You’ll be able to access them from anywhere, at any time, and as many students who need them at the same time.  We will talk more about this exciting new resource at the Law Library’s STUDY SMARTER, NOT HARDER workshop, coming up on Wednesday, August 30th, so stay tuned for more details about that!

Basically, we’re ready for your return, ready for action and excitement and helping.  We’ve been working on projects and improving the Law Library all summer, and those of us who teach have been preparing our new classes, but as they say in too many movies, it has been quiet.  TOO quiet.

But we have our Practice Ready Institute classes starting this coming Monday the 14th, Orientation for transfer students is on Tuesday the 15th, and our three-day Orientation for new 1Ls starts on Wednesday the 16th.

Our Law Library hours for this coming week are as follows:
Saturday 8/12 – Sunday 8/13: CLOSED
Monday 8/14 – Tuesday 8/15: 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
Wednesday 8/16: 8:30 AM – 8:30 PM
Thursday 8/17: 8:30 AM – 10:00 PM
Friday 8/18: 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
Saturday 8/19 – Sunday 8/20: CLOSED

But after that, we will be resuming our regular hours for the Fall semester:
Monday – Thursday: 7:30 AM – Midnight
Friday: 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM
Saturday: 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM
Sunday: 10:00 AM – Midnight

We’re thrilled that you’ll all be back soon, to liven up the doldrums of August.  Do stop by.  Hopefully you’ll spend a lot of time here, and you will love our comfortable new study rooms, which you can reserve through our Law Library website (once again, http://eguides.barry.edu/BarryLawLibraryHome).  Get to know our staff, and we’ll look forward to getting to know you.  If you’re new to Orlando (or even if you aren’t), I’ll recommend you the best restaurants in town.   And we’ll enjoy the air conditioning and look forward to September together.
